Artist bio: Leyla Reynolds is an artist and producer working in London whose practice concerns the absurdity of pop and political culture, often in regard to its relationship to blackness. A founding member of gal-dem, she helped create gal-dem's signature visual style over the years and curated the list of creatives that they now work with. She has extensive experience in workshopping and arts education events, judged the 2019 World Illustration Awards for editorial illustration and recently co-curated and produced the 2019 Activating Newham exhibition with Create London.
Leyla says: “So, my concept is one of the noise of being checked in upon, particularly prevalent at the start of lockdown, a few weeks into boredom and loneliness everyone has now become more acclimated to. Most of my friends received all manner of messages from people who had cut off ties with them first and suddenly they were receiving this weird barrage of interest when they could do nothing about it. Tbh it also speaks to me now and all manner of non-black folk checking in on me and asking if I want to talk about the current situation. It's hard to know what to say. But that's a side note. In sum, I feel it speaks to a lot of people.”
