This design is about the search for joy and a celebration of the strange and unusual. I drew this just before the first anniversary of my mother’s death, while I was dealing with my own health struggles, and shortly after I also lost my grandmother. The state of the world has seemed so negative over the last few years and finding joy has felt more and more difficult. Historically magpies have drawn superstition, with significance placed on the number of birds seen at one time- captured in an old English rhyme which starts “one for sorrow, two for joy”. The flowers, lily of the valley, represent a return to happiness. In remembrance of my mother and our shared love of biological anomalies I decided to give two heads to each magpie, in an effort to summon double the joy.
I am a queer non-binary visual artist, originally from Massachusetts and currently living in Brighton & Hove. A total of 10% of profits will be donated to WWF to support the protection of our environment and the creatures we share it with.
