Research and conversation has taught us that a productive and active way in which we can be allies, is to use the resources available to us. So, here's a t-shirt, inspired by the words of Dr. Lilla Watson (which I've heard quoted numerous times over the past week), an Aboriginal (Murri) activist, academic and artist, who attributes the sentiment to the collective work of the Aboriginal group in Queensland (1970's), which she was a part of,
'If you have come here to help me, you are wasting your time. But if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together.'
Systemic change demands action from us all. Whilst any person is oppressed, we are not liberated. The system is bred from and based on Whiteness and the oppression of Blackness, as well as Indigenous people, and POC. And if like me you are borne into it and benefit from it, to challenge the system we must also challenge ourselves. The problem is also ours.
I hope the sentiment - that all of our liberties are ultimately bound together, inspired by Lilla's outlook, comes across and is clear. Although one can never fully carry another's load; never can it be completely understood or experienced, we can nevertheless, vow to educate ourselves, show solidarity, be an ally and take action.
I was nervous to post this, in fear of saying the wrong thing or making it about me, however, I've learnt that it's always better to act than to not. In this climate we shouldn't let our fears stop us from taking action.
Made to order with Print Social, a London based studio.
