Tacugama chimpanzee sanctuary was created in 1995 and it is the only rehabilitation center for chimpanzees in Sierra Leone. Our primary objective is to enforce the wildlife laws of Sierra Leone and provide a safe and natural haven for rescued chimpanzees with the ultimate aim that in the future they can be released back into the wild. We also do conservation work, environmental education and field research across the country.
The picture of the t-shirt shows Mortes, one of our chimpanzee ambassadors. Mortes came to us in 2012. A local diamond worker from Kono district came to us with an 'abandoned' baby chimp. They took care of him in their camp for 3.5 months, but then he caused problems with the local worker's wife. Mortes is the leader of the toddler group along with Perry. He is one of the most unique chimps in the world, as he has whites around his eyes making him appear extremely human. He is often the culprit throwing rocks at visitors!
Buying this t-shirt, you will support the sanctuary and the work we do. Thank you!
