UNITY is a collaborative project between SEASON zine and eight football creatives celebrating what UNITY in the game means to them.
Stephanie Francis-Shanahan’s practice is based around a stream of consciousness of the connotative power of clothing and the body as an experiential being/living sculpture. Her adoration of the cathedral of the football stadium and the aesthetic and emotional sensibilities of football fan culture, paralleled with her Irish Roman Catholic upbringing within inner city London, remain visual codes for her to draw from. Stephanie has been lucky enough to explore these ideas via a combination of projects with the Barbican Centre during 2017-2019 and by creating a costume and sculpture for Elton John’s farewell tour backdrop video. Stephanie is now in the middle of a Fashion Image MA at Central Saint Martins as she is interested in how fashion can enable image-making to be spread to a wider audience.
‘The inspiration and design of my t-shirt is based on the summer of 2018 and the collective joy felt by millions of people in England. It was the summer of the World Cup and Love Island, with the stars of both becoming national treasures for us to chit chat about to this day. I had made a pair of Jordan Pickford-themed shorts in the winter of 2018 and wanted to make my T-shirt an ongoing tribute to the collective euphoria and pride we were able to feel for that moment.’ Stephanie Francis Shanahan
