UNITY is a collaborative project between SEASON zine and eight eight football creatives celebrating what UNITY in the game means to them.
Born in Liverpool, educated at Slade Art School in London, Ruth Davis paints her experience of football – its motifs and ephemera, playing in the park on overgrown pitches strewn with wildflowers. She finds inspiration in the 5–a-side women’s football teams on Instagram as there is a special camaraderie and they are highly creative, expressing themselves through the shirts they wear and the way they play. Ruth makes images that reveal the beauty and joy of football, its players and culture. Her work has appeared in Vogue online, Shukyu magazine, Joia magazine, and was recently Copa90’s Artist in Residence.
‘In terms of the design, I looked at some of my favourites: Katherine Hammett and text artists Barbara Kruger and Jenny Holzer. In another life, I’d be a text artist. Why football et fleurs? Because both are beautiful! I wanted to avoid any floweriness: the words say it all and it had to be as clean as possible. There’s a nod to my work in the hand-painted SEASON logo.’ Ruth Davis
