’Open your eyes ’ by Georgia Salisbury

-------------------------------------------------------

According to the 2017 Carbon Majors Report, 100 companies are the source of over 71% of industrial greenhouse gas emissions, yet these same companies continue to persuade us climate change is the fault of the individual consumer. We need to stop turning a blind eye to the actions of these selfish corporations and make it clear that it is they who need to take action and reduce their consumption, and consider the impact their practices are having on the environment and its inhabitants.

While the Glasgow climate pact agreed at COP26 in November 2021 did reaffirm the global commitment to accelerate action on climate change this decade - such as by UNEP launching the international Methane emission observatory to drive action on reducing methane emissions, as well as more than 100 world leaders promising to end deforestation by 2030 - many, including myself, felt this was too little too late. The United Nations secretary-general Antonio Guterres himself said that these are 'important step[s] but is not enough'.

We need to continue these efforts and also keep putting pressure on big corporations to take drastic action, not make empty promises.

As individuals, it may not seem that we have much power, but if we come together we can use our collective power as consumers for good. Whether that's through boycotts, petitions, protests, etc, there is still hope of getting through to these big companies and continuing to attempt to reverse the effects of climate change.

I've chosen to represent these ideas in a fairly literal way, by having the figures in the foreground oblivious to the factory fumes choking the sun in the background
