Have you eaten yet?
食咗飯未?
Sik Jor Faan Mei
This is a common way to greet someone in Cantonese.
In celebration of Mid Autumn Festival, its celebration surrounds the moon, gatherings, lanterns, and most importantly - food (and mooncake!).
With food playing such a significant part in Hong Kong culture, love is often shown through that. Asking someone if they have eaten yet shows that you care about the person, to know they are happy and well fed. Some of my childhood memories are filled with receiving a steaming bowl of rice with a fried egg on top from my mom. It's a humble meal but it's filled with warmth and love. Till this day, whenever I call my mom, she will without a doubt ask me - sik jor faan mei?
I wish that this Mid autumn festival is filled with love and food for all.
