THE CORK 2005 PRINT RUN RETURNS - AND THIS TIME WE'RE DONATING OUR PROCEEDS TO THE MOVEMENT OF ASYLUM SEEKERS IN IRELAND (MASI)
In 2005, Cork set itself as the centre of the world - or Europe at least - with a fancy branding campaign. Not a huge success, but you can relive it.
I don't remember much of 2005. I was eleven. I remember seeing one of our streets transformed into a giant theatre where a stage adaptation of Frankenstein was performed on stage that looked like a ship. That's it.
But the idea of Cork as a cultural capital, and the now-iconic firework logo, remains trapped in our collective identity. We may have lost some of our great spaces, but there's a fiery heart to the place still. Yes, what was supposed to be our new world-class music venue is still a pile of rubble. And yes, we're as bad as Dublin for all of its invented place names for gentrified neighbourhoods. But there's a passion in the city that won't die. At least, that's what I'm saying. I saw this logo on an old bus driving around town and thought it was hilarious so I said I'd put it on a t-shirt.
