There’s a lot of debate over who threw the first brick at Stonewall - was it Stormé DeLarverie? Marsha P. Johnson? The night has reached a mythical status, even interviews with the people there will give you different answers.
One thing we know to be true is that the first Pride started as a riot, fighting back, a response to police brutality, a mass refusal to no longer stay in the shadows.
This design honours those who came before us - be that Stormé or Marsha, be it the trans youth who saw no other choice but to take their own lives, or be it the countless people lost to the AIDS crisis.
We continue in our global fight for LGBT+ rights and we remember who and what we’re fighting for.
Being queer is a beautiful thing and we must always remember to mourn the dead and fight for the living.
