INDIGENOUS HANDS

Ross Aitken

The Yanomami are a group of indigenous people that live in the Amazon rainforest. They are one of 350 ethnic groups that inhabit the Amazon, acting as caretakers of the environment, protecting the land, respecting wildlife, and utilizing traditional knowledge passed down through generations. Besides providing a home to tribes such as the Yanomami, the Amazon rainforest also stores 76 billion tonnes of carbon and its trees release 20 billion tonnes of water into the atmosphere per day, playing a critical role in global carbon and water cycles.

Today, tribespeople such as the Yanomami face a litany of dangers from illegal deforestation, cattle ranching, and gold mining. Resistance to these activities is often met with violence and the introduction of disease by visitors from the outside world is also a huge concern. Because of this, the threat to the Amazon's indigenous population and by extension, the Amazon rainforest itself has never been greater.

In Yanomami culture, there is a belief that when the last of their shamans are gone, there will be no one left to hold up the sky. This apocalyptic prediction offers a potent metaphor for the existential threats faced by the Amazon's indigenous people and the important role they play in protecting one of Earth's most vital echo systems. It has also served as the inspiration for this project.

I designed this t-shirt in collaboration with Survival International, a charity that works in partnership with tribal peoples to campaign, lobby and protest for their land rights. 70% of all proceeds (65% from myself and 5% from Print Social) will be donated to Survival International, meaning that by purchasing, you will be helping them to continue their important work in supporting indigenous communities who in return, support and protect the planet we all call home. For more information on this charity and on the Yanomami people, please visit their website at www.survivalinternational.org
