Bun Hate Let's Skate

Jon Horner & Kane McArthur

Bun Hate Let's Skate - the peaceful skate protest that took place in Margate, Kent - was a powerful display of community solidarity and activism. The event was organized by Kane McArthur to raise awareness and funds for People Dem Collective, a registered CIC and community organization that is working to establish a national cultural center in Margate, Kent.

People Dem Collective -

People Dem Collective is founded by members of the Black, Brown, and Diaspora communities, People Dem Collective aims to address the lack of space, engagement, and inclusion for these communities in Margate, Kent and beyond. By providing a platform for healing and transformation, the collective is creating a space where people of all backgrounds can come together and celebrate their shared cultural heritage.

The Bun Hate Let's Skate event was a day filled with fun and excitement, as participants skateboarded from Margate Job Centre through to Broadstairs and then back to their DIY park, where they had organized a BBQ and they took part in challenges, and participated in a raffle to raise funds for People Dem Collective.

It was heartening to see so many young people coming together to support a worthy cause and using their hobby as a way to raise awareness and funds. Through activations like Bun Hate Let's Skate, People Dem Collective is able to connect, collaborate and promote building a more inclusive and vibrant community in Margate and beyond. If you're looking to get involved in the work of People Dem Collective, visit their website to learn more about their mission and how you can support their efforts.

Scorcha Skate School -

Scorcha Skate School is a grassroots company built on the momentum of the Bun Hate, Let’s Skate events. We founded the company off of the same ideals and beliefs, to dismantle stereotypes, create an inclusive space for all and utilize a shared passion/ interest to unite and uplift people from all backgrounds.

Our goal is to share this experience with as many people as possible, aiming to make skateboarding an accessible sport for all. Teaching all ages and abilities, as well working closely with schools, councils, youth clubs, and other organizations. Trying our best to create lasting connections to have a positive and progressive impact on our local community.

Margate is next on the list to receive an olympic level skatepark. Creating opportunities for our local young people to become world champions like the likes of SkateboardGB rider Sky Brown, or even just to enjoy the space to stay active, social, healthy while expressing themselves creatively and having fun. So it is down to Scorcha to make sure that the next generation of skateboarders represents all walks of life.

Jon, I’d like to thank you personally for depicting a design so perfect to portray exactly what we represent. As well as bringing us this amazing opportunity to aid our organizations work and for always being an ally to our movement.
